American dream serves as Atlanta native 21 Savage’s highly-anticipated third studio album, following 2018’s I am > I was. It doubles as a soundtrack to his debut film, American dream: the 21 savage story, reflecting on his journey to success and long struggle with his immigration status. Savage was previously arrested in Atlanta during 2019 for having a visa that expired in July 2006.
The album was initially teased by Drake during an It’s All a Blur Tour stop on July 25, 2023, where he stated that he and 21 were working on their own projects, not long after they released their joint album, Her Loss. On October 7, 2023, Savage’s lawyer, Charles Kuck, said in a statement that the rapper had been cleared to travel overseas following his 2019 arrest by ICE authorities.
Months later, in December 2023, billboards began appearing in Savage’s home city of Atlanta. They donned an alternatively colored American flag, alluding to the album’s title. The following month, Savage announced the album’s release alongside a trailer, debuting “all of me.”
